January 2009
On the 2 January 2009 the Russian Welfare Society celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the repose of its Patron Saint – St John of Kronstadt.
On the eve of the Feast Day evening services were held at the Church of Our Lady’s Dormition. His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion was the main celebrate and was assisted by the clergy of Victoria. We were also honored by the presence of His Lordship, the Right Reverend Nikolai, Bishop of Alaska who was a guest of the Russian Welfare Society. After the Matins service Fr Thomas McArdle was tonsured by Metropolitan Hilarion to the monastic state and given the monastic name of Elijiah.
The Feast of St John was celebrated in the chapel of St John of Kronstadt at the “Kronstadt Gardens” Aged Care Residential Complex. Despite the limited space, His Eminence was assisted by six priests and two deacons. The chapel was overflowing with residents and their relatives. The service was one of great spiritual joy and a worthy celebration of our Patron Saint.
Services were followed by a festive luncheon in the Grand Dinning Hall for all present.
